Gold mining has a more negative affect that most would imagine. Gold mining can contaminate water sources around mining areas that can have long term effects on the surrounding communities. There are a number of chemicals involved in gold mining that are often run off in to near by lakes, rivers and sometimes, the ocean.
Gold mining can also produce a large amount of air pollution because of the extreme amounts of dust and particles that it stirs up. A lot of the equipment used is also powered by dirty energy sources and are far from fuel efficient.
The most devastating effect of gold mining may be the communities that it affects and often displaces. There is a lot of gold mining that goes on in poor countries, such as the Philippines, where villages are often forced to leave so that gold miners may come in.
