Animal and plant respiration produce carbon dioxide from the uptake of oxygen and nutrients. The ocean also is a source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; carbon compounds released from oceanic organisms can be oxidized to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Volcanic eruptions, primarily on a large scale, release carbon from rocks deep in the Earth’s interior.
