Some high-polluting industries are chemical manufacturing (fertilizers, pesticides, pharmaceuticals), oil refining, logging, mining, and agriculture.
This can be a difficult question to answer because there are many different types of pollution as well as different standards and methods of measurement of pollution across the globe. Chemical manufacturers, metals, cement, and paper processing plants, oil refineries, and agriculture in general are some of the most common polluting industries worldwide. However one of the most important considerations to take into account when that answering that question is to consider the laws and regulations of the country where that industry resides, as it can greatly affect the potential for these industries to pollute more or less.
One very controversial industry that results in air pollution as well as a wealth of other environmental impacts is coal power. The sixteen large coal plants that have been built in the US since 2008 in addition to the sixteen additional plants that are planned will produce approximately 125 million tons of greenhouse gases each year, in addition to smoke and other byproducts that are put into the air from the processes of coal power.
