Although there are hundreds of invasive species, this web site lists the top ten in Arizona. The offenders include the Quagga Mussel, which clogs water supplies; buffelgrass, which increases the ability of fire to spread and overtakes native plant populations; and the New Zealand Snail, which takes food and territory away from snails native to Arizona.
There are also red fire ants that originated from South America which have been responsible for crop loss, nursery infestations and livestock depletion. The Asian tiger mosquito is also a big threat, carrying harmful diseases to humans like West Nile virus, yellow fever, and dengue fever. The northern crayfish has also been responsible for disrupting ecosystems, and populations are out of control because they have few or no predators. For more info, click here.
