CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, their mission statement is to “ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.” CITES, works with different governments to create and enforce international trade policies.
There was the embargo that was placed on tuna from Mexico who were practicing unsustainable fishing methods that was killing 100,000 dolphins a year between 1984-1986. The reason that the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was established was to help restore international economic stability.
So when it was discovered that countries like Mexico were the reason for decreasing dolphin populations, many were outraged. The tuna fisherman were using a method called ‘dolphin setting’ that involved them locating schools of dolphins (who would always swim underneath schools of tuna fish, something that still has not been figured out). So the large nets that went and caught the tuna would catch the dolphins as well, that would many of the times cause them to drown.
So now the dolphin safe tuna logo can be credited to the embargo that was placed on Mexico’s tuna and dolphin population because of their methods, which they later changed because demand was going down.
