This government initiative, called The WaterSMART program, was established in February 2010 as a result of the SECURE Water Act, a congressional law that passed in 2009 so that agencies from federal, state and local levels could work together to plan for climate change, plans to prevent threats to our water supplies, and take action. These agencies will work together to “establish a framework to provide federal leadership and assistance on the efficient use of water, integrating water and energy policies to support the sustainable use of all natural resources, and coordinating the water conservation activities of the various Interior offices”.
The Yakima River Basin Study, First One Completed Under Reclamation’s WaterSMART Program Report was released on February 2, 2012. The purpose of the study was to characterize and address the water resource imbalances in the Yakima River Basin.
