India has already taken some significant steps to develop wind energy; and though this renewable energy source still makes up a very small percentage of the country’s energy generation, it has potential to grow in coming years. India also has immense potential to develop solar energy, and the Indian government is considering an ambitious plan to become a global leader in solar energy production. According to this plan, India would be producing about 20 Gigawatts of solar energy by the year 2020. However, for the plan to work the world’s richer economies would almost certainly have to contribute financial aid. It remains uncertain whether rich countries like the United States will make the financial commitment needed to launch solar power on a large scale in India, and help India drastically reduce its carbon footprint.
