The harmful gases from auto exhaust are carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and ozone. These harmful components can have negative health affects on someone by hurting their blood, organs, causing disease, etc.
Ozone is not a direct product of automobile exhaust, but ozone does form from the nitrogen oxides and the hydrocarbons that are emitted from vehicles. In addition, sunlight is necessary for these reactions to take place, causing ozone concentrations to peak in the middle of the day. If you are into chemistry, I recommend checking out this page for an explanation of the chemical reactions that take place to form troposphereic ozone, which is harmful to humans while statospheric ozone is the good stugg.
