The San Diego Zoo is a self-proclaimed leader of giant panda conservation efforts. The zoo became the first in America to produce a giant panda cub through artificial insemination. The zoo has seen the birth of five panda cubs in captivity, and their researchers have developed technology to track pandas in China’s Foping Nature Reserve. Within the last decade, partly thanks to the San Diego Zoo’s efforts, the Chinese government has increased its number of panda reserves from 4 to 62.
