Wolves, like most animals, fit into the ecosystem in important ways. For example, wolves are the primary predator of the elk in yellowstone. Without the wolves, elk were overbrowsing the aspen trees. The presense of wolves has not only cut down the numbers of these elk, but altered the behavior of the remaining elk to the point that they no longer eat too much in one area. The abundance of deer in most areas of the U.S. is because we have driven off or killed wolves through-out most of our country.
