There is the ASPCA which stands for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals.  They have been around for quite some time and have task forces in a few cities to prevent animal cruelty.  Another is the American Humane Association.  This organization works to prevent child abuse as well as animal abuse.

Save the Animals Rescue Foundation, or the STAR Foundation, is a Long Island non-profit dedicated to providing shelter and rehabilitation to injured or abandoned animals, both wild and domesticated. In Defense of Animals (IDA) is on a mission to eliminate animal exploitation, cruelty, and abuse, by protecting and advocating for the rights, welfare, and habitats of animals, and to raise their status beyond that of “things” or commodities.

There are also a number of nonprofits that deal with conserving the land of wild animals and preventing development from encroaching on wild habitats. Some of the most successful organizations have been the World Wildlife Fund, the Nature Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the Sierra Club.

This may not have been what exactly you meant by working with animals in your question, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to list some organizations that have done a lot of work with wild animals, as well.
