One feature of new urbanism that makes it an environmentally-friendly option is the concept of walkability. According to this, most necessities would be within a walking distance of about 10 minutes from home and work. Also more pedestrian-friendly street designs would improve walkability. The goal of this concept is to reduce the amount of driving we do, which would reduce the amount of toxins being put into the air by the cars. Also creating a better sense of community among neighbors and local businesses. This will help increase more local production like farmer’s markets.
New Urbanism also champions the use of green transportation over cars. It is committed to implementing the use of clean electric trains and light rail for traveling long distances and to the use of bicycles, scooters, etc. for shorter trips.
