There are quite a few sustainable European cities, so one way of getting started is to look at which cities have won the Sustainable Cities Award, which is designed to recognize cities in Europe that have made noticeable progress at being sustainable. It has only been awarded four times, each time recognizing from 3 to 5 cities that have done exceptionally well. In 1996, Albertslund, Dunkirk, Graz, Leceister, and The Hague were recognized. In 1997, it was Calvia, Heidelberg, Stockholm, and Veliko Turnavo. In 1999, Barcelona, Gdansk, Munich, Norwich, and Tampere. Finally, in 2003, the winners were Ferrara, Heidelberg, and Oslo
