The largest threat to the Arctic ecosystems is oil and natural gas development. Apparently, the U.S. may pump oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Canada is likely toextract gas just east of the refuge and Russian and northern European energy companies are already operating in the Arctic.”
It is common knowledge that the Gulf of Mexico is suffering from a BP oil spill. However, it has somewhat flown under the radar that BP is planning to start another drilling project three miles off the coast of Alaska this coming fall. Even though this project will take place three miles off the coast, it is considered an ‘on-shore’ project. It is these kind of oil and gas extraction projects that are threatening Alaska’s ecosystems.
