Parts of San Francisco are built on top of a landfill.
The entire Back Bay area of Boston is landfill.
In Hull Massachuessetts, there is a windmill built on top of a landfill.
A common use for closed landfills is to build a park or nature preserve on top. This is a good use for the land because it creates a public use area that would otherwise not exist in the community. I have seen on in San Mateo, CA on the San Francisco Bay that is a destination for birdwatchers, bikers and hikers; and is planted with native grasses. It still looks like a landfill from a distance since it is the only hill in a flat area, but close up it is very pretty.
