In addition to putting a number of fishermen out of business, the loss of the Couesius plumbeus (lake chub) from American lakes will cause a number of undesirable ecosystem changes. A number of birds, such as the fulmar glacialis depend upon chub eggs for food. Also the chub is one of the few species competing with the invasive zebra mussels for food (the zebras are winning). If the chub completely disappears, the population of mussels will continue to soar and dominate the wildlife of the Great Lakes.
