Research this well, because many times destinations that are described as “eco-friendly” in reality are suffering from the environmental impact that tourists are making. Many times too, foreign companies are running the tourist facilities and the locals aren’t actually making much money. For an authentically eco friendly experience I recommend going to visiting an eco-village or a town that is has developed a strong localized economy and sustainable ecology. For example El Bolsón, Argentina, Todmordon, England, or Ithaca’s eco village in New York. The following website is directed at people who want to study in an ecovillage, which is maybe a bit more than you want to do, but the site does provide a nice list of ecovillages that you can look into just to visit.
