It largely depends on what the water has been contaminated by, but some diseases that spread via drinking water sources include Legionnaires’ disease (which can lead to pneumonia), giardiasis (a gastrointestinal infection causing fatigue and diarrhea), typhoid fever, dysentery, cholera, salmonella infection and even the hepatitis virus. The drinking of contaminated water by pregnant mothers can also lead to an increased risk (by as much as 50 percent for those with a high level of exposure) of birth defects. Drinking water polluted by organic contaminents (like agricultural runoff and manufacturing pollution) can also lead to internal organ damage affecting the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, lungs and more; depression of the central nervous system; immune system, reproductive and digestive tract damage; eye, nose and skin irritations; and even cancer.
