One of the worst diseases from polluted water is diarrhea, which is not itself a disease but is cause by many bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms. It is a serious problem and it is estimated that 2 million people a year die from diarrhea. Cholera and dysentery can also be contracted through polluted water. And if sewage is polluting the water then there are a hole host of other diseases you can get.
In under-developed countries, some common diseases caused by polluted water include cholera and dysentery. These diseases can be transmitted both orally and fecally. Jaundice and infectious hepatitis have also been noted as common diseases from polluted water.
Some other diseases that are caused by water pollution are giardiasis and amoebiasis. There are multiple ways to contract these diseases. Giardiasis is contracted through poorly untreated infected water, groundwater contamination, pipe breaks, areas where wildlife uses the same source of water. Symptoms for giardiasis are diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, and flatulence.
Amoebiasis is contracted through sewage, non-treated drinking water and flies in water supplies. Symptoms of this disease are abdominal discomfort, fatigue, weight loss, diarrhea, bloating and fever.
