What are some disadvantages of monocultures?

For one monocultures do not have any biodiversity.  Much of the land is devoted to one type of plant.  This makes it especially susceptible to pests and diseases that can easily run wild and destroy whole fields of monocultures.  This causes farmers to apply more pesticides and fertilizers to the land.
