What are some differences between preservation and conservation?

    Preservation is to protect something which might include endangered animals or to preserve food and keep them fresh for longer periods of time. Conservation is an ethic of resource use, allocation, and protection. Its primary focus is maintaining the health of the world, and its biological diversity. The consumer conservation ethic is sometimes expressed by the four R’s “Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.

    Simply put:

    Conservation= proper use of nature

    Preservation= protection of nature from use

    Interestingly, John Muir was a preservationist and was very involved with the beginning of the National Park Service.  Giford Pinchot was a conservationist and was involved in the beginning of the US Forest Service.
