1. Costa Rica should be on this list at least for effort. They abolished their army so they could redirect funding to preserve their country’s vast biodiversity and ecotourism industry. Costa Rica still is dealing with environmental problems caused by the tourism part (an influx of people creates more waste and a need for more resources) but to their credit, they’ve place 21% of their land in protected reserves while other third world tropical countries have succumbed to deforestation and desertification because they replaced their natural forests with palm oil or eucalyptus plantations. 2. Though Iceland isn’t the most natural resource rich country, it does use what it is has wisely. 89% of homes are heated by the island’s geothermal energy and Iceland plans to be energy independent by 2050.
