Solar power can be inconsistent because of cloud cover and other weather factors. Solar panels also have varying levels of efficiency for converting sun light to electricity. Storing the electricity is also an issue, as in having a battery that can hold all of the electricity. With a smart grid, however, that would not be an issue because users would be able to send their excess electricity to the grid.
Generating enough power to replace electricity is a problem, as well as the limited availability of the sun. Cost and the limits of installation (panels need space and plenty of sun free from obstruction) are other problems.
