Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Chlorine and Sulfur are all often present in plastics, particularly those first two of Carbon and Hydrogen.
There are a wide variety of chemicals used in specific plastic applications but in general plastics are petroleum based and therefore are composed of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. However, there is a widely used chemical in products such as reusable plastic water bottles, food can linings, water pipes and dental sealants called Bisphenol A. It is a man made chemical that acts as an endocrine disruptor as it mimics the rule of natural hormones and has shown to affect reproduction and brain development in animal case studies.
