One of the benefits of genetically modified cotton is its resistance to certain pests. For example, Bt cotton is a human developed strain of cotton that is resistant to one of the most problematic pests, the American boll worm. As a result, Bt cotton requires less pesticide, but more careful planting and management on the part of the farmer.
On the downside, companies like Monsanto that genetically engineer seeds generally modify them so that the seeds may only be used once, and so farmers must buy these expensive seeds year after year.
