Hard water means that the water source contains unnecessary minerals such as iron, copper, manganese, calcium, and magnesium. When any of these minerals combine with soap, the result can be curdling leaving scum. This scum can be found attached to washed clothes, bathtubs, toilets, and attached to pipes leading to clogging. Hard water can even lead to poor grooming effects when bathing.
Another offset of hard water is that when people have it, they will purchase a water softener. However, most water softeners use a system that uses a lot of salt and creates salt waste that is very bad for the environment. There are some water softeners that have a more eco-friendly system but they are still fairly new to the public and not very commonly used.
