Hemp is a great alternative to wood-based paper. It can be recycled many more times because of the strength of its fibers. It can grow almost anywhere (and is not psychoactive like marijuana) so it would certainly curb deforestation. It produces paper of archival quality (very strong). One of the drafts of the Declaration of Independence was created on hemp paper. It can be grown in a manner that is not damaging to the environment and has so many industrial uses that it can create a ton of jobs.
An alternative way to make paper is to use grass. You can even make it home using baking soda and grass clippings from your yard. Bamboo is also a grass that is turned into paper. Grass is more sustainable than trees because it is easier to grown grows quicky.
