The thing with mining is that there really isn’t much else that can be done to obtain the metals and minerals that are mined. The best option is to regulate mining so that it is done with the least amount of environmental impacts.
For large-scale mining that means stricter government regulations with enforcement. The improper care of the areas surrounding mines has its environmental and social ramifications and preventing these requires more stringent adherence to prescribed guidelines.
Small-scale mining issues generally deal with mercury mining. Mercury can cause ecological damage if not properly managed during the mining process. Using proper technology and again following protocol is a good way to prevent harm.
All in all though, the best alternative to actually mining is to move away from the materials that are obtained from mining. For example with metals, we can look to use recycled materials as opposed to mining new materials.
