A big organization working to help the coastlines is the Coastal Conservation Association. In addition to the national entity, many states have their own state-wide chapter. Other agencies working to protect coasts include the Coastal Conservation League, the Center for Coastal Conservation, the Nature Conservancy and state environmental entities. Organizations vary by coast, and many specialize only in the coasts of certain bodies of water.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is heavily responsible for collecting, synthesizing and presenting data regarding the health of the world’s coastlines. Data from both the ocean and the atmosphere are collected to better understand not just how the coasts affect humans, but also how humans can affect the coasts and how to balance economic growth with ecological sustainability.
