What are solutes?

When one is creating a solution, i.e., mixing to substances together, the solute is what is being dissolved in. What it is dissolved into is the solvent, often water. For example, if you were making sugar water by pouring sugar into water and stirring, the sugar would be the solute and the water would be the solvent.
