According to azonano.com the smallest living organism is a nanobe. They are found in rocks and in sediment. The basic debate about nanobes are that they have yet to be proven that they are actually alive. Once this debate is settled, nanobes will be considered the smallest living organisms.
To add on to what jacoba said, nanobes are so microscopic that they almost “violate the minimum requirements of the biological laws for the existence of independent life”. They are almost not even considered organisms at all!
They are a thousand times smaller than the smallest cell in the human body, and ten times smaller than the smallest known bacteria.
