Shifted cultivators are people who, after being forced off of their own land, move into rainforest areas upon encouragement by the government to establish small-scale farming operations. These people are currently blamed for 60% of tropical forest loss.
It is important to note is that these shifted cultivators are often forced off their land by governments or corporations who themselves clear rain forest areas for massive farming operations. Left with few options, the shifted cultivators simply follow roads previously created by abandoned deforestation efforts and begin supporting their families by setting up small farms. The initial dispossession of these poor farming communities is the work of the large-scale deforesting companies.
