The lighter screens in patio windows and doors are usually made from aluminum or fiberglass screen cloth. The strands of fiberglass are usually .011 inch in diameter for window screening and .013″ diameter for screen porches. Fiberglass screen cloth is easy to scratch and break the fibers, and the screens tend to get hard and brittle with age.
Storm doors need to withstand more harsh weather conditions – the frame is usually aluminum and the mesh is polyester, which is stronger than aluminum or fiberglass mesh.
The screen material is a metal wire, fiberglass, or other synthetic fiber mesh, stretched in a frame of wood or metal.
