What are the risks associated with privatizing a country’s drinking water resources?

The classic example of this was when Cochabamba, Bolivia had all their water rights taken away (year 2000) and private companies controlled the public supply. The companies shot the prices through the roof (it was even illegal to capture rainwater in your own backyard) until massive protests in the city streets forced the government to make water a public utility again. The links below describe the Bolivian story and provide more information about water rights around the world.
