There are 6 common hormones used in hormone fed meats. There are three which are naturally occurring—Oestradiol, Progesterone and Testosterone—and three which are synthetic—Zeranol, Trenbolone, and Melengestrol. All of these additives have been proven to have potential negative impacts on human health. These artificial hormones can also impact the natural hormones of humans. They can interfere with the reproductive system, cause some birth defects and have even been traced to some cancers.

These chemicals also have negative environmental impacts. When cows ingest these additives they are released from the animal through their manure, which decomposes and seeps into the earth, potentially contaminating ground water sources.

Other than growing animals to abnormally large sizes (pro for some, con for others), there are really not any benefits to artificially stimulating these animals. If cheap meat and potential harm is what you are looking for, then the additives are a pro. If not, going with naturally fed meat is the best approach.

    • Hormone free meat is more natural and pure
    • With the USDA 100% Organic Seal you know your food is safe and healthy
    • Animals that are hormone-free and free-range lived happier, healthier lives than those that are not
    • The organic movement in argiculture is better for the environment
    • Your health will benefit from not being over exposed to antibiotics (you could build up a resistance to drugs you may need if you get sick!)

    • Hormone-free meat can be more expensive, estimated to be 100% more expensive
    • If foods are not USDA approved they could potentially be unsafe
