Ethanol can be produced domestically since it is a renewable fuel that comes from agricultural feedstocks. The use of ethanol results in less pollution and smog-forming emissions (50% less than gasoline). However, depending on your location, ethanol can be more expensive than gasoline. Ethanol also contains less energy than gasoline. A car will not run as far on a gallon of E85, and fuel economy will decrease by 20-30%. Ethanol is also only widely available in the Midwest.
