    A prion is an infectious protein particle similar to a virus but lacking nucleic acid.

    Prions are made up mostly of proteins and act as infectious agents.  It does not self-replicate, but instead infects a host cell.  The actual word “prion” comes from the longer words “proteinaceous” and “infection”.
