In this case Organic refers to molecules that contain carbon and not a method of agriculture. Organic pollutants are molecules that have low water solubility, high lipid solubility, and high molecular masses. What that all means is that once created these molecules are extremely hard to break down and can cause accumulative damage in human and animal tissue. Long enough exposure can cause disruption of the endocrine, reproductive, and immune systems.
Organic Pollutants occur naturally and synthetically.
Some example of organic pollutants include: – Hydrocarbons. – PCB’s – Insecticides such as DDT’s – Detergents.
