Pretty much answered yesterday; see the link. Open-cut and open-cast differ slightly (if you want) from open-pit in that the former two strip overburden off in relatively shallow excavations, while pits go down deeper. It’s mostly a matter of semantics and choice, however, and many would call all excavations open to the surface open-cast, with pits and cuts being some kind of subset of that. And many others use the words interchangeably.
