Most common in urban areas are Nitrogen Oxides, Volatile Organic Compounds, and particulate matter. Nitrogen Oxides primarily are emitted from combustion, while Volatile Organic Compounds and particulate matter originate from vehicle exhaust. Particulate matter can contribute to photochemical smog, as can ozone, which is formed from Nitrogen Oxides and Volatile Organic Compounds. Ozone is also detrimental to human health.
