There is scant evidence that catfish of any type are dangerous to humans. The much publicized candiru, a small parasitic relative to larger catfish, supposedly enters through the urethra but there is only one reported case. The goonch (bagarius), a large asian catfish, has been speculated as the cause of some drownings, but there is little proof besides in several sensational television shows. The Wels Catfish can reach up to 9.8 feet in length but the only story involving it attacking a human was told by the fisherman himself, and thus is not scientifically viable.
