A monadnock is a pretty cool geological formation that occurs when a sturdy rock formation is left behind after surrounding earth is eroded away. Often, they are formed from quartzite or volcanic rocks, both very hardy compositions that stand up against the elements. They generally appear in temperate regions in the middle of flat or level plains, which makes them very striking features in the landscape. They help form unique environments for plants and animals and are often seen as sacred places to different cultures around the world.
