Methanogens are microorganisms that produce methane as a biproduct of their metabolism.  These microorganisms cannot live in the presesnce of oxygen, and therefore often live in high humid areas, such as wetlands.  They also can be found in the stomachs of animals and humans and are responsible for flatulence.  There are more than 50 species.
