Despite offering what seems to be an exceptionally clean energy source, nuclear power poses some serious threats to the environment and any humans living in the vicinity of a major reactor.  Nuclear waste is full of highly radioactive elements that take a very long time to break down and our current disposal solution is to bury them deep within the earth’s crust.  A second threat is of a meltdown or a rupture of the reactor as we have seen recently in Japan.  Exposure to radiation in any large amount can lead to serious illness, cancer cases, and death.
