The main effects are:
The greenhouse effect, which is caused by pollutants trapping heat in the atmosphere that would normally be radiated into space;
Particulate contamination, which is unnatural matter in high concentrations in the air, like ash or asbestos;
Increased UV radiation, caused by thinning of the ozone layer;
Increased ozone concentration at ground level, natural at high altitudes but at ground level it contributes to things like smog;
and increased levels of nitrogen oxides, which are toxic gases emited from high temperature combustion.
