The last orgran to grow in a baby are the lungs. The last step for lung development is to produce surfactant that will prepare the baby for breathing on their own.
The lungs are the last organ to develop in a fetus, because the placenta is able to provide the baby with oxygen before this. They begin to develop in the 25th week of pregnancy, and by the 36th week they are developed enough for the baby to survive outside the womb. While the baby is developing, the lungs are filled with fluid, which is usually gone by the time the baby is delivered so that it is able to breathe on it’s own. Steroids can be given to help the lungs develop more quickly in a fetus if the mother goes into early labor and it is in danger.
