The Eastern Lowland Gorilla is the world’s largest primate. A male gorilla can weigh up to 500 pounds (230 Kilograms) and be almost six feet (1.8 meters) tall. In captivity, Gorillas have reached weights of over 800 pounds.
The largest primates ever were in the genus Gigantopithecus, which existed between 1 million and 300,000 years ago. They could be almost 10 feet (3 meters) tall and probably weighed 1,200 pounds (540 kilograms).
