The largest hailstone ever recorded weighed over 1.6lbs, and was over 5 and a half inches across! However, it should be known that even much smaller hailstones can cause massive damage. Hail falls in “swaths,” that is, in very defined paths. If one of these paths crosses a farmer’s field, the crops will be destroyed. The same goes for a swath across a parking lot!
The largest hailstone ever in the US was a seven-inch (17.8cm) wide chunk of ice almost as large as a soccer ball.
