The largest bat in the U.S., the Western Mastiff Bat (Eumops parotis), can be found in California.  The body length of this species ranges from 6.3-7.4″, with a wingspan of 21-23″.  Due to its size, this bat first drops 10 feet in the air to begin flight.  The species is currently at risk due to habitat reduction.
