The prokaryotes, which consist of archea and bacteria, is the most diverse group of organisms on the planet. They evolved around 3 to 4 billion years ago, which means they have been around twice as long as protozoans and three times longer than animals. Therefore, they have that much more time to become diverse. They can live miles below the earth’s survace, inside of glaciers, around thermal vents, in clouds, or at the bottom of the sea floor.
